FAST FACTS:

SdKfz 251 was a medium weight armored personnel carrier. The crew consisted of driver, commander and a ten infantry men. Development of this vehicle started in 1937. Its chassis was taken over from artillery prime mover SdKfz 11 produced by Hanomag company. The armored body was created by Büssing NAG company.

Serial production started in 1939 and continued until the end of war. Altogether some fifteen thousand pieces were built. There were four production versions, varying in details of the armored body design. These were called Ausf. A – D.

23 official modification of the original armored personnel carrier were created. Each of them was somehow modified to fulfill specific tasks. Some of them were just support machines (command and radio vehicles, cable laying vehicles, pioneer vehicles, ammunition carriers, armored ambulance etc.) while others were direct combat vehicles (carrying mortars, flamethrowers, anti-aircraft guns, anti-tank guns, rocket launchers etc.). Beside the official versions there were also a lot of field conversions.
